In life, we often encounter moments that require us to step out of our comfort zones, face our fears, and take a leap of faith. Whether it's pursuing a new career opportunity, starting a business, or making a significant life decision, overcoming fear is essential to unlock new possibilities and growth. If you've ever taken a leap of faith to do something outside your normal, you know it can be daunting!
In fiction writing, I get to explore how to help fictional people overcome their imagined wounds, beliefs and behaviours they've developed from their experiences. I have to put myself in their shoes, try to understand their perspective, and design experiences that will help them transform into the people I know they can be so they can live their best lives. Here's the process I work through.
Understanding Fear: The Roadblock to Progress
Fear is a natural response designed to protect us from potential harm or danger. However, excessive fear can act as a barrier, hindering our personal and professional development. It's essential to identify the root cause of their fear and understand how it manifests in their thoughts and actions. Having my characters acknowledge their fears and their underlying triggers, helps them begin to address them proactively.
Shifting their Mindset: From Fear to Possibility
Changing their mindset is a powerful tool in overcoming their fear. Instead of focusing on the negative outcomes or what could go wrong, I try to shift their perspective towards the possibilities that await them. I try to get them to embrace a growth mindset that views challenges as opportunities for learning and growth. By reframing their thoughts and beliefs, they can build resilience and cultivate a sense of optimism that propels them forward.
Cultivating Self-Confidence: Embracing their Inner Strength
Self-confidence is the antidote to fear. Recognizing their strengths, accomplishments, and past successes can boost their self-belief. Practicing self-care, positive affirmations, and visualization techniques to reinforce your confidence levels. Surrounding themselves with supportive individuals who uplift and encourage them on their journey is key, and self-confidence is a trait that they can nurture and develop over time.
Taking Calculated Risks: Embracing the Unknown
Taking a leap of faith often involves taking calculated risks. While stepping into the unknown can be daunting, it is where growth and transformation thrive. I break down larger goals into manageable steps, creating a roadmap towards my character's objectives, and I stay prepared to adapt along the way, because fictional characters have a way of making their own decisions!
Embracing Failure: Learning from their Setbacks
Failure is a natural part of any journey towards success. Instead of viewing failure as a defeat, I try to get them to see it as a valuable lesson that guides them towards improvement. I get them to analyze what went wrong, and use the experience to refine thier approach moving forward. Every successful individual has faced failure, and I keep in mind that it's the resilience to persevere that defines their triumph. And that's what great mentor characters are there to remind them of.
Making the Final Transformation
Overcoming fear and taking a leap of faith is a transformative process that requires courage, self-awareness, and a positive mindset. By putting myself in my characters' shoes as much as I can, I try to understand their fears, shift their perspective by seeing another character's point-of-view, cultivate confidence with small wins, take risks when they realize they can't return to their old status quo life, and embrace failure as a learning opportunity, which makes them somewhat comfortable with being vulnerable—which is where the magic happens.
